A campground is located each at Bird Lake, Mirror Lake, and Bench Lake. The area is accessed from Trout Lake via the Mount Adams Recreation Highway, northeast on Forest Road 82, to Forest Road 8225, and on Tribal Route 285 Bench Lake Road , passing the Bird Creek Meadows Parking Area, and ending at Bench Lake. Bird Creek Meadows is best accessed via Forest Road 82 to the north of Trout Lake, WA. Drive north from Troutlake on Road 23 sometimes referred to as the Mt. Adams Area Recreational Road for about 1.4 miles to a Y-junction, taking the right fork which is Rd 80.
The so-called classic route for Mt. Adams has become the west ridge and is accessed from Willow Lake on the west side of the Sangre de Cristo Range. That route is rated a Class 2 by Roach. Others give it a Class 3 because of the little bit of scrambling encountered for the summit block. But Adams may also be accessed from the east side of the range at the Horn Creek TH.

Be sure to drop down into the crater itself and look around for great vistas of Bench Lake, Heart Lake, and of course Hellroaring Canyon and the gorgeous Mt Adams which looms over you. A challenging return option is to descend into Hellroaring canyon to the west of Little Mt Adams, and cross the swampy meadows to Heart Lake.

The lake is wonderful, as always. Bring a bug screen, and DEET lots and lots of DEET The mosquitoes are much less in the lake, so thats pretty much where I stayed. We tried to hike up Adams using both of the two trailheads from Bench Lake the one for Hellroaring Creek and the loop hike which hooks into the HC hike .

Horseshoe Lake Campground is situated on the northeast end of the lake, in the east side of the popular Midway High Lakes Area below Mount Adams northwest flank. The lake is popular for camping, quiet boating electric motors or canoeing , and hiking and biking on a trail half way around the lake.
